Elevating Excellence & Transforming
Institutional Culture.

Through funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Faculty Institutional Recruitment for Sustainable Transformation (FIRST) Program, Vanderbilt FIRST (V-FIRST) is an initiative that seeks to build a thriving scientific faculty who are committed to inclusive excellence, creating a sustainable culture of inclusion and equity, and enabling high-impact scientific discoveries.

V-FIRST seeks to hire faculty in the following four thematic research areas:

  • Infection, Immunology, Inflammation, and Metabolism
  • Structural Biology and Imaging
  • Genetic and Omic Discovery and Health Disparities
  • Neuroscience

(we) Cultivate Inclusion

V-FIRST will implement policies that focus on the hiring and retention of faculty who are committed to inclusivity, cohesion, and belonging.

(we) Cultivate Equity

Using an equity framework, V-FIRST will implement an inclusive faculty search process that proactively identifies early career* scientists who have demonstrated a commitment to inclusive excellence, equitably evaluates candidates, removes barriers to applying, provides well-resourced start-up packages, and delivers individualized career development that enhances successful candidates’ commitment to inclusive excellence in the Vanderbilt community.

*“Early career” scientists are defined by NIH as those who are within ten years of their terminal degree, unrelated to their age. NIH offers opportunities for scientists who seek designation as “early career,” despite the timing of their terminal degrees, to apply for such designation. See https://grants.nih.gov/policy/early-stage/index.htm.

(we) Cultivate Transformation

V-FIRST will help transform Vanderbilt into an institution with a thriving scientific faculty and a sustainable institutional culture of inclusivity and excellence.
